for about the 10 years I ran FrankenTruck, (a hodgepodge collection
of Dodge and Chrysler parts that created a D150 with a big block and
a pretty stout runner) I used the electric choke conversion on the
non stock 4bbl on the modified 400CI that was dropped into the
engine bay. Never had a cold start problem as long as I used it
reasonably often. If I let it sit for several weeks then it was
tipple a little gas into the carb if I wanted to avoid a longer
cranking time to get it going.
Got the 12V for the electric choke off the pos side of the coil I
recall.
Had to spend a bit of time cleaning up the wiring under the hood of
that beast due to the conversion from a 318. That was an easy spot
to tap for the needed juice for me.
Even in 1980, the poor 318 was saddled with a good deal of fiddling
for emissions controls in a truck.
Somehow once the 400 was in place and full headers installed almost
all the emissions stuff was no longer hooked up to anything.
