I would expect to pay that much for a high end 392 hemi
rebuild. Price is a lot, but since you don't have anything in writing, then the
best you can try to do is negotiate with him. Maybe he'll help you out a little
if you're a nice guy and don't threaten law suits or whatever.
Whether he gives you a price break or not, be sure you get
a written warranty from him before paying him the extra $$$$.
