RE: [Chrysler300] Goldenrod Land Speed Record Hemi Powered...

You are 100% right; I just like 392 too much. Wishful thinking. But like the “unblown”…! Summers bros were A++++

Just 15 minutes ago I was measuring 4.375 Velasco billet crank for a 392. Was ~ 480” in large bore Donovan block. So happy I was distracted about Goldenrod (Good excuse?) !! Beautiful thing!!

In the old days, people did not like 426 at first. “screwed up heads on a New Yorker B block” was the vibe. Guess that vibe was wrong. But 392 has longer rods, better rod angles;  just needed 4/38 X 4 3/8  to take care of that young kid 426!  Back then…I think Garlits stuck with “increased” 392 for a long time, why there Is a 417 Donovan. but 426 got sorted out. Today’s hemi fuel engines only look like MOPAR; everything in them is new.

In fact on a HP/cu in basis the built 354 might still be top dog. They got 600kp at only 5500 at that engine masters thing.

Probably still true,  though, what was said , when all were around in 1970. 440’s beat 426,and 340 six pack beats 440! (generally true on street , as delivered) .I went down to buy a new 70 hemi Challenger, R/T convert ended up with 440. No AC with hemi was why. (heh heh). ~ 14 gallon convert tank, 9 -10 mpg, 440 E body could not make length of mass pike. Later had a real 480” stroked 426 hemi cuda. I bought from a 300 club guy in Jacksonville Fl. with no motor, 4 spd stripper. . Like driving on ice, really nose heavy, could never get traction. Overrated car, in reality. Could use that Hemicuda $ today!  And Buick 455 stage GS nemesis always killed me in the 440. Way it was.. Liked that switch pitch converter those Buicks had. Really good idea, worth a car length at least, right off the line.

Sorry John, but it’s you. The Goldenrod did use 4 426 Hemis. I’m sure there were other land speed record attempts with dual 392’s, but not this one. I have the original Hot Rod from back when this was fresh news.

I think they made a mistake at hot rod..it had two hemis, maybe even 392. I
read that, and thought they screwed this all up..or maybe it is me who is
all screwed up . Hot Rod wings it a lot. That tech guy in back makes lots of
mistakes .

Whatever ---Goldenrod is an unreal thing. From two guys in a garage

For the history buffs, this is the 50th anniversary of the "Goldenrod" land
speed record run at Bonneville. The record of 409 mph in a normally
aspirated engine set stood for ten years. They had used 4 426 cid engines
borrowed from Chrysler were used and three articles recounting the event and
restoration are shown below.
