Your mechanic is right about the motor, it is only 2 speeds. The extra low
speed on an A/C car is done with a resister on the firewall in the engine
compartment. It looks like a round ballast resistor, mounted above or next to
the brake booster.

OK Guys,
Here is one for you:
My mechanic just did an awesome job of repairing the AC/Heat Blower Switch
that had apparently melted down somewhat. The knob on the switch indicates
three fan speeds. He is telling me that he thinks that the blower may be a
two-speed: OFF-Switch pushed all the way in. LOW-Switch pulled out one
click. HIGH-Switch pulled out two clicks.
So my question is: Is the fan a two or three speed fan?
