Terry:
Back in about 1993, I drove my '66 300 to a meet in
Washington. Before I left, I adjusted the push rod of the master cylinder
to get better pedal. I apparently lengthened it a bit too far and
eventually ended up with no brakes at all while going 60 mph downhill across the
bridge between Portland and Washington. I quickly downshifted and
gradually applied the emergency brake to slow down and got off the freeway at
the first exit where I found a nice large vacant parking lot. I
readjusted the length of the rod back to it's original position and
regained brakes. I drove around in circles in the parking lot to test them.
The best solution is to adjust the clearance of the
shoes/drums.
SOOOO, be very careful what you do with the push rod
length. Apparently, I lengthened it too far and gradually the MC backed up
fluid in the tank instead of in the line to the brakes. It could have been
catastrophic. Besides, I had my parents in the car.
Take care and good luck. Are you going to drive your F
to NM in September?
