Richard, I think you and Chris hit the nail on the head with timing, Although I recently made sure dwell and timing were spot on, the disrtibutor  was not very tight and I was closer to 5BTC than I was 10 BTC. Moving it to 10 caused the idle to go up, causing the idle bypass screws to go in, causing a resurvey of the 4 mixture screws etc. I was sirprised by how much better it sounded and it does not die at idle in D-tonight anyway.

Your issue isn't the idle mixture screws in my opinion. They should never really be beyond 3 turns if everything else is okay. The idle screws are really for fine tuning anyway. 

• What are you doing with the idle speed adjustment screw and where are the throttle plates at? (is the idle screw opening the plates at all?) The idle mixture screws become useless if your throttle plates are open too much and if your throttle plates are open that much to keep the car running, you definitely have another issue.
• It sounds to me like you have an ignition timing issue or vacuum problem (leak) somewhere. Was the car running well before? (Is this a new problem that started without any changes)
• Have you checked all the linkage to ensure everything is working as it should and nothing is sticking?

I just spent an exasperating half an hour adjusting, (or trying to adjust,) the idle speed on my carbs.

The problem I am trying to eliminate is the engine dying at stop lights unless I keep a foot on the gas and one on the brakes.

Out of gear, the idle speed is fine except the transition from hs idle to curb idle is pretty raggedy. 

I have been following the factory service manual procedure which calls for  initial one turn open on idle bypass screws and one to two turns open on the idle mixture screws. I can get the engine idling at 650 and each idle mixture screw seems to be at max rpm.  But when the car goes into gear, it dies. I've been increasing idle speed up to 800, but it still struggles in gear at a stop. 

Is it too lean?

I am guessing unscrewing the mixture screws ought to richen it  up. 

Should the bypass screws be so open as to have audible hissing from the intakes?
