RE: [Chrysler300] brake drum balance weights?

Maybe there was some inconsistency say an eccentric bolt hole pattern in hub , ?? but it fits front and back , same drum? Later 360 and some cast crank 440 have a weight like this on converter , to correct an expected, designed in imbalance some other place. And yet, drum not indexed rotationally to wheel ....Is it indexed to hub ? rear has keyway slot, hard to believe that matters.

Above probably all wrong.

Maybe machining centerline of casting, the center cast bore to pilot on was always out some, to save money, they did not control CG of brake drum mass to centerline of bearing or pilot bore (? Hard to do anyway, unless you found CG of each casting each time ) so they were out on CG some small amount,(compared to drum weight) even post machining, fixed by about same size weight, ---if off set was due to this, was probably about the same each time, each casting run . Probably was, but in different random directions depending how chucked up to turn it? ? Or put another way, inner machining is a perfect circle , but outer drum bulk may be eccentric to that ? Not machined at all on outside, used as cast. Could mike drum radial thickness , check for variance in depth around it?

While a different subject, any one know why a TF might feel like something is holding back or dragging in reverse; operates perfectly forward, rebuilt twice now, still this sensation. Isa 904, but all work the same, as far as I can tell. Rear high line pressure OK.

My dad, who was a Chrysler master tech from 51 to 61 told me those tabs were balance weights tacked to the drums. Not necessarily a fact, but that is what he told me.

Subject: [Chrysler300] brake drum balance weights?

Hello All

Regarding the recent thread on drums, while renewing the brakes on my late fathers 1957 300C, I noticed that there was an extra piece of metal welded onto the outer face of each drum near the outer periphery the piece was in the shape of an arc about 2-1/2 long X 1 wide X ~ 3/16 thick. I would normally guess that this was some sort of balancing weight (probably around two ounces, on only a ~ 5-inch moment arm), but I am somewhat concerned about that because ALL the weights were the same size on each drum, and I could find no apparent consistency in location around the circumference. Furthermore, I have a hard time believing that there could be exactly the same imbalance amount and location for each of the four drums, especially considering that they are essentially perfectly circular, with not much possibility for imbalance.

Is there a better explanation? Any thoughts on this?
