Ron: Thanks for the link. I note that the VIN in the text of the ad and the VIN on the tag in the photo differ. The VIN tag shows M591 100264. As a teen in the ‘50’s, I worked in a Phillips 66 station in Des Moines. It was not uncommon to see rust through in the second year of a car—especially over the headlights in the eyebrows. Salty mud would pack up in there and easily eat through the poorly=protected or unprotected tin. Some customers would have us wash off the mud and salt in mid-winter but the tin was very poorly protected. People that knew and cared would have their car “Ziebarted” right off the showroom floor. The process involved drilling homes to access hidden areas and spraying a nasty waxy/tarry coating into the hidden chambers like the rockers as well as on the exposed flat surfaces and suspension and tubing on the bottom side. It could end up being a little messy with overspray under the hood and door jambs but worked pretty well. Lucky you if you have a 300 from a damp and/or salty area and if it has some little plastic plugs in strange places on the underside and door jambs where the Ziebart material was injected. Wet soggy carpets from melted snow and slush kept the floorboards wet and rubber trunk mats assured that atmospheric water would condense under the mat and rust the top of the trunk floor. It’s a wonder that any cars from the ‘50’s ever survived in the Midwest. Caring drivers with several cars and storage space might just park their 300 about this time of year and take on old man winter in a disposable car. Further, if the garage was heated, this would prevent moisture from condensing on the pretty chromed steel and pot metal surfaces. All of this is still applicable to preservation of our precious Brutes. Rich Barber Brentwood, CA -With a NYC ’93 Jeep Wrangler Renegade and a Maryland ’86 Chrysler LeBaron T&C Conv—sorta Ziebarted and mostly VG. Our ’55 C-300 lived its life in the Colorado Springs area, came from the factory undercoated and pretty much survived with just surface rust. Our ’64 300K conv was delivered new to Memphis and spent 20 years or so in a damp basement in NC with pimpled pot metal and surface rust. Floors were repaired previous to me and I had them POR-15’d throughout the passenger compartment and trunk. That should last until all cars are outlawed. Our ’99 Wrangler has lived its whole life in the SF bay area and is amazingly rust free.
