Brandt, Just to build a bit from my own experience on what Pete has written. When it comes to the transmission cable adjustment, it's really important to get it right, especially from a safety standpoint. Two years ago I removed the shift cable from my G to fix the leaking outer casing on the cable and had a difficult time getting it adjusted properly. To make a long story short, The only way I was able to finally get it set correctly was to drop the pan and had someone in the driver's seat push the buttons while I watched the action from below. In my case, I found that my kick down lever bushing was worn and contributed to the cause of not being able to adjust the cable by conventional (service manual) procedures. I was able to deal with the worn bushing issue by shimming up the lever with extra washers to get consistent shift positions, but it would not have been possible unless the pan was dropped so I could actually see what was happening. I can't tell you what your problem is without inspecting it, but can tell you that if the transmission is not reliably going into neutral you are inviting disaster. If you were to be standing in front of the car with the engine running and a misadjusted cable, the car may lurch forward and cause you serious harm. This is a job for someone who knows what they are doing, and has the confidence to do it right to protect you, your car and others that may work on your car. There are explicit instructions in the service manual as to how to set and adjust the transmission and if you follow them, step by step, you will do it successfully. When I had my G redone in 1998, the guy who put it together was put off when I told him I wanted him to follow the manual step by step, and I wound up in the car on the lift, holding buttons in while he did the cable, but I have never had a problem and it has worked like a charm from the first shift back then to today. Telling you that "This is what happens when these things get old" is hardly an answer. Hell, they are all old, and they still work. Also, getting it "close" isn't something a real professional would settle for. I'm not sure where you are located but I'll bet there is a club member somewhere near you who has had a cast iron transmission rebuilt, installed and/or adjusted successfully. That would be the person to get a referral from. Strikes me that if this is the third rebuild you have done on the transmission, somebody isn't doing something right in any event.
