Hi All, Piggybacking on Pete's email below, and having watched my late wife go through 30 surgeries over the first 12 months of her illness, I know firsthand that infections are an epidemic issue being fought at hospitals. One is actually at a higher likelihood of contracting an infection at a hospital than in their own home... so I have read. If Gary's getting repeat infections, the problem may lie in a compromised immune system OR it may be somehow reflective of the quality of care he is receiving (or some combination therein). I too think it would be wise to seek medical attention at a larger, more established hospital if Gary can be moved. I've seen both the best and, more often, the worst of some of the nation's best hospital systems. If something isn't working at Hospital "A", it's often a good idea to begin dialogue with Hospital "B". At the very least, the consulting physicians at the current hospital should be strongly "encouraged" to seek the consultations of external specialists at teaching hospitals. My two cents at the risk of sticking my neck where it doesn't belong. Only wishing Gary and his family a quick, positive resolution to the current situation. I am sure that Ron didn't intend that post to sound the way it did, and I agree that it would be great to have someone help them out, but I am more concerned with the care Gary has been getting (or perhaps not getting). I will preface this by acknowledging that this may be none of my business BUT, having had Gary subjected to numerous surgeries with the same problems coming back time and time again, it has occurred to me that, perhaps, its time for him to get out of Kalispell and get to a place with a major medical facility, maybe one with a teaching hospital. I cannot believe that it is usual for something like this to repeat itself over and over again, with repetitive infections and unsuccessful surgeries. If a surgical procedure doesn't work the first three times, what makes them think it will work the fourth time? Why do these infections keep coming back? Seems to me it is time for a second (or third) opinion. Again, I realize I probably shouldn't be sticking my 2 cents in, but I just hate to see Gary go through this, and cannot help but think there must be a better way. If someone out there with some free time is looking to do a good deed, maybe they'd be willing to head up to Montana and give Gary and Alana a hand while Gary is recouperating. I hear that Kalispell is beautiful this time of year.
