Re: [Chrysler300] Need shocks for 1957 300C

I paid $134 with shipping from Rock Auto last fall with the 5% discount code; so about the same price.

Re. Konis and Bilsteins, I thought there was discussion awhile back that one could no longer get those brands for our cars? Anyhow, the Imperial club guys highly recommend the KYBs. If they can hold up to the weight of an Imperial, they should do well on a 300. I think the question is how long will the KYBs last?

I still had the original factory Oriflow shocks on my ‘57 New Yorker with 35k miles from new and 55 years of use. They still functioned OK but were starting to leak; so I had the KYBs installed. The new KYBs are about three times stiffer and the car handles like it’s on rails. The totally rebuilt front end probably helps as well.

$135.22 for the complete set. FREE SHIPPING if you're not in a big hurry.

I put these on my 300C many years ago and have been more than happy with them. I *think* that's about what I paid back then.....

Hi All,

I have not purchased anything from ‘Just Suspension’, but they keep sending me emails with some fairly nice discounts on KYB shocks and other items.

Ray
On your "Shocks" questions. First, the KYB shocks in my opinion, are not substantial enough for the Chrysler. I've used them on several cars and found them lacking in holding the cars solid to the road. They (KYB's) also have a very small diameter cylinder and shaft. Too small to handle the mass of a large car (again my opinion). I would recommend something like a Bilstein(Sp?) Shock, they are massive when compared to the KYB. They are also pricey, but worth it. If you have the spec's for the shocks you're replacing, end types and collapsed and extended lengths and car weight you could probably even get a set of Koni's also. Anyway, in case your curious, I've used the KYB's on a two Lincolns a 70 Mk2 and 74 Mk4 and will not use them again. I'm also needing shocks for my next project a 57 Saratoga, and saving my pennies for the Bilstein's. Good luck in your search.

Hello Group -

I am restoring my late father's 1957 Chrysler 300C, and am currently working on the suspension. Although the shocks on the car seem to work OK, I know they are not original (fronts are blue Monroes, rear are no-name black ones), so while the front end is apart and shocks are easily accessible, I would like to replace them with modern gas-charged shocks that are appropriately valved for the stiffer suspension on the 300C, rather than for the supposedly softer spring rates on the New Yorker, for example. Andy Bernbaum has gas-charged shocks, but admits that they are not really anything different for the 300C; they are merely applicable all across the line.

I recall (but can't find) previous correspondence on this subject, talking about gas-charged KYB shocks. Can anyone please refer me to a current source (and applicable FT/RR part numbers, if available) for the Heavy-Duty shocks (any brand) for my car?

Thanks,

Ray Melton
