Re: [Chrysler300] Zincified oil for a C-300?

Not to be arugmentative, but the Corvette site is just plain in error. Valvoline VR-1 Racing Oil contains zinc and phosphorous additives in nearly identical levels as does Brad Penn Penn Grade 1 motor oil (1,400/1,300 ppm vs. 1,500/1340-1400 ppm - insignificant difference).

        Hi Michael & All,

Am sharing a post from the Corvette site that claims that the Valvoline VR1 DOES NOT have any more Zinc than regular street oil but recommends other available Valvoline products.

Short Version here & long version after:

"For those of us who actually want truly elevated levels of zinc in our oil, we have to look no further than Valvolines two other Race Oils. They have conventional (petroleum) Racing Oil and Synthetic Racing Oil, both of which truly have elevated levels of zinc."

        Tony Rinaldi

Ps, been using Brad Penn but it tends to leak under hard road use.

VR1 Racing Oil isn't the oil we thought it was.
I picked up a Valvoline product manual over the weekend. It clarified some questions about their Racing oil products. It turns out that VR1 Racing Oil is just ordinary new car street oil that says Racing Oil on the label. I think most of us thought it was extra good stuff because of those words, and because it said it contains ZDDP (Zinc DialkylDithioPhosphate), which we commonly just call zinc. That ended up being just marketing hype, since even the newer street oils still contain some zinc, just at much lower levels than they used too. Of course, that reduction was done for emissions reasons to prevent wrecking the cats on street cars, certainly not to help the engines. As we know, zinc is considered one of the main additives that gives extra protection against engine wear. Many consider the fact that zinc has been nearly removed from newer street oils to be the primary cause for the rash of flat tappet motor wiped lobes. It may also be a contributing factor to solid roller lifter failures as well. So, of course, racers and gearheads typically like to stay away from street oil if they dont run cat equipped cars. The thing is, VR1 is API certified as SM rated (check the bottle and youll see), which is the latest street oil rating for current new cars, as well as older ones so they claim. But dont tell that to the guys with wiped lobes. In order to meet that latest strict API rating, the zinc level is at its lowest level yet..so much for Valvolines feeble claim of contains ZDDP. And so much for VR1 being actual Racing Oil. I think most of us expect true racing oil to have much larger amounts of zinc than even the older good street oil. On top of that, I recently came across a Valvoline link on the web, where they talked about VR1 being a synthetic blend, though they dont even say that on the bottle. So. they dont make it widely known that it is a synthetic blend, yet they do imply it has a lot of zinc, which is doesnt. I know many people are quite happy using VR1, but the good it is doing for them apparently comes mostly from it being partial synthetic, not from any help from zinc. Jegs lists this oil for $5.00 per qt. I was planning to use it in the 540 Im building, but now I wouldnt even consider it.

For those of us who actually want truly elevated levels of zinc in our oil, we have to look no further than Valvolines two other Race Oils. They have conventional (petroleum) Racing Oil and Synthetic Racing Oil, both of which truly have elevated levels of zinc. Since they do, they say clearly on the bottles, Not Street Legal, which is because they will actually ruin the cats on cat equipped cars. And they dont carry new street oil API ratings. Jegs lists the conventional at $7.00 per qt and the synthetic at $9.00 per qt.

While Quaker State Defy has an apparently adequate level of ZDDP, using a synthetic motor oil in an older engine is usually bad news in my experience. Every single enthusiast I personally know that has tried synthetic motor oil, save for one, in their older auto has experienced engine seal oil leaks. The Internet contains hundreds of articles and testimonies to that occurring.

I would be very leery of using any synthetic motor oil in these old engines. I won't take the chance....

Valvoline VR-1 Racing Oil has a high content of zinc-phosphorous and is not synthetic. It's available in a wide variety of viscosities. I've used their 20W-50 for some time in my "F" and in my Chevelle SS LS5.

        Viscosities available: 10W-30, 20W-50, SAE 30, SAE 40, SAE 50 and SAE 60

I used to use Rotella motor oil on the advice of my wife's boss, who is the manager of fleet maintenance for a major battery manufacturer. But just over a year ago Quaker State introduced their zinc enriched Defy brand motor oil. If you Google search "quaker state defy" you'll find lots of info about it. I've been using it in my 300H and my 79 Jeep CJ7 and have been fully satisfied with it. No leaks, no drips, and the bonus is 1 MPG improvement in fuel economy in my Jeep. I haven't checked MPG on my Chrysler yet.

John Peabody was trying to get this message on the server. Ive seen some
igh-zinc oil and additives advertised but have not kept the information
andy. Anyone having a good answer for John, please send it to him at:

Has the 300 group come up with a zinc replacement or a zinc additive for
ur flat tappet brutes? Everything I come up with is a synthetic oil or a
lend. I stored my C-300 without changing the oil knowing I'll have till
pring to come up with an oil or a zinc add. My friend added synthetic
il in his Chevy 409 and sprouted leaks. My Chrysler is the only car I
ave, new or old, that doesn't leak and I want to keep it that way. The
ight choice should work for the 'old man' or the 'hot rodder' type driver.
