RE: SV: [Chrysler300] A serious 55 Kelsey Hayes issue - brake failure-Whoa, Nelly!

Chrysler changed the p/b booster in 1956 after only one year. Properly
maintained and adjusted, the '55 braking system does provide stopping power
but it will not put granny thru the windshield or even onto the shifter
lever. There is a reason for the 9" wide brake pedal-room for both feet.

All that said, I'd recommend not changing out to a '56 booster. I drive my
'55 like I should drive everything-with plenty of safety space cushion. We
get too used to really great 4-wheel disk brakes with ABS. Such was not
the case in 1955.

If you're bound determined to bastardize the car, repipe the chassis for a
dual mc and add a safety factor. Make sure the new mc and the existing
linkage are compatible, well adjusted and aligned. Careful fitting of brake
shoes (arc ground) and following service manual procedure for adjusting the
shoes is critical to achieving best braking performance.

But, I'm preaching to the choir.

Even though I haven't had a [problem with my master cylinder on my 55
Chrysler, I have wondered rather I should replace the 55 with a 56 Power
brake setup.

I have been unable to find any information to support a comment that some
parts were changed within the one year of the power brake unit for 1955.
That unit is; however, unique in that the master cylinder portion and the
booster portion share some critical components. You can remove the cast iron
cylinder part from the booster, but you will leave behind the part called
"piston and sleeve" which has sealing components that are a primary part of
the master cylinder. In order to completely recondition (or replace) the
master cylinder the booster must be disassembled to replace piston and
sleeve or its seals.
The bottom line is that you cannot recondition or replace either the master
cylinder or the booster without reconditioning or replacing both of them.
They are a unit----makes it usually expensive and a little more difficult to
work on.
