Simplest place to start would be to measure the voltage across the battery terminals when the engine is off, when it is idling and when it is revved up a little. The voltage should be around 12 volts with engine off, a little over 12 at idle and around 13-14 volts running at speed. Turning on the headlights for a few minutes before starting the car will slightly lower the charge and allow you to measure charging voltage. If you don't find a raised charging voltage then further checking is needed.
