The K had a 440 dual quad inline setup with H style oval air cleaners. Who knows if it was a '60s 440 or a later low comp 70's 440. This would hold down its value. Outside of the 440 and the aftermarket wheels (original wheels and covers were included), the car looked very nice on HDTV and in the online photos, with a new correct interior, well detailed. The H was not aired on TV. From the online photos the H looked very nice especially paint and chrome but the engine compartment showed a little wear; it was well equipped with factory air and auto pilot. It did not appear to be a full frame up restoration but I could be mistaken. I was not at the auction and there is no substitute for seeing the car in person, IMHO. I'm curious if any of our Florida (or other) members happened to go over to the auction and view these cars in person to see if the selling prices seemed fair. As we've discussed before on the forum the auction results are very dependent on having the right buyers present at the time of sale and on the condition of the specific car. Unless true letter car enthusiasts are bidding, the hammer price may seem surprisingly low. In general, the sell through rates at the 2011 auctions so far are improving and sale prices overall are on the rise. The first couple days at Mecum (also at B-J in Scottsdale) are oriented towards the so-called "affordable" cars and so some may not be full restorations. You can pay a higher entry fee and get prime time placement on the block when possibly more of the "high roller" investors are on site, but I don't think the sale prices would have been much higher on these two vehicles. A true "investment grade" F or G convertible (of course with the ubiquitous and incorrect wire wheels) would get bid up pretty high, but the H through Ls simply aren't going any where right now IMHO. So I say again that one really needs to check out the vehicle onsite in order to ascertain its true value, but on the surface it would appear that both this K and H were relative bargains. They said the K had a 440-4v, and it had after market wheels. I don't know if the engine was a 440 or if the fellow mis-spoke because I didn't see it.but even if the car was considered for its mis-matched engine and wheels..that's a great buy, and the announcer indicated that as well. I think the economy has really affected this market but as we all know, like real estate, they're not making any more of these. The only issue is to be sure that younger people learn and understand what these vehicles are and what they have come to mean. This is a good time to buy, definitely not the time to sell. A lot of the cars on Mecum were going for less than one would have expected. It was listed as a southern California car. Looking at what some of the other cars sold for 55 Metropolitan sold for $ 17,500.00, how do you figure that. On EBay, nice 62 Sport 300's they can hardly give them away. I must rethink my plans for my 62's.
