[Chrysler300] Pertronix Ignitor 1382 Update

Hello 300 land with 413 tach drive dual point distributors converted to
Pertronix - I am curious if anyone else ran into these issues - if not
interested hit delete now.

I recently purchased the Pertronix kit 1382 for my J from member John
Lazenby - great price and fast shipping! The ignitor module fit my breaker
plate but just barely. The air gap between the ignitor module and the magnet
sleeve was too large. I solved this easily by drilling the mounting holes
in the ignitor plate about 1/32 inch larger which allowed me more
flexibility to position the ignitor module relative to the magnet sleeve and
reduce the air gap. But still no spark! Turned out that when the magnet
sleeve was fully seated onto the point cam, as per the instructions, it was
positioned too low relative to the ignitor module and would not trigger the
ignitor. I had to move the sleeve up about 1/8 inch on the point cam to
better align it with the ignitor. Then everything worked just fine.
Obviously then the rotor cannot be fully seated as well, but both the rotor
and the sleeve fit reasonably snug on the point cam and stay in position.
The dizzy cap also still fit just fine although I am concerned that with the
rotor sitting up higher than it should that it might chew up the contacts in
the cap. Is it just my dizzy, which is original and has wear, or did others
have this trouble? With deference to Pertronix, they make these units to
fit all kinds of distributors and I suspect there is much variation across
distributors even of the same model. No problems with voltage - just
followed the instructions. I tapped the 12V switched ignition wire at the
ballast resistor. The unit will fire on 8 volts or greater and cranking
voltage is more than that at least with a good battery. You don't need to
jumper the ballast resistor with a stock coil, but should if you use the
Pertronix coil.

Anyway, other than the timing getting thrown way off, which is to be
expected, once I reset the timing and idle/mixture the J finally runs
smoothly for the first time since I bought it. I only had time for a short
test drive before the sun set on this nice Indian summer day in Iowa, but so
far I am pleased.
