"the Good Ole days Of trust _____(trusting ,Mechanics)" "Cheap Gas and Generators" stories to share.... Here is one from 1957. I was in high school in New Orleans and my steady girl friend was in school in Oklahoma City (long story). On any long weekend I would leave on Thursday after school, (I liked driving at night because it was cool, but most importantly, I could make better time on the farm to market roads (I always found the most direct ones, map sense) and no police or traffic: I hold the record PRE-freeway, NOLA to OKC in less than 8 hours. Anyway the story is, on one trip, my '55 (the brand with the most gen. and starter problems) with idiot light starting to pulsate on an off, glowing said GEN. I stopped about 9PM in Bunkie, LA at a gas/service station. The mechanic told me it was the generator and needed rebuilding and he could do it in the morning. I do not remember how much it was to be but I told him that I did not have the money then and I had to be in OK-city tonight, my love was waiting... He said he could loan me a generator until I could come back through. I said ok and I left my wrist watch as collateral (I feel certain the generator was worth more than the watch). But he put it in and I was on my way in an hour from stoping. I did give him the money on the way back and I think he let me keep the one he had put in. I wish I could remember how much it was but it could not have been more than $5 to 10. I can not even remember how I paid for gas back then even at 0.25 per gallon. On that I do remember once with 1/4 of a tank and needing 1/2 to get home I was given enough Diesel to make a little over a half of a tank and made it home. Seems like the car liked it and I rarely ran below 70, unless behind a truck. Perhaps 7:1 compression! I know diesel must have been very cheep if gas was $0.25! Don't forget Camel Cig's in the machine for $.25 with three pennies under the cellophane. Oh! the steady! A few months later I found out she was also (both at the same time) going steady with a ball player in OK. I still to this day can not drink GIN since I got sick on it after finding out.
