Cams can usually be removed and installed while in the car without too much trouble, other than the awkwardness of ripping into an engine that's not on an engine stand. (Less awkward than removing the engine it in most cases though) The rad must be removed of course and sometimes the grille and/or bumper, depending on the vehicle. If you have A/C, then there will be much more to remove. A few words of caution, a new cam installed on old cam bearings is of concern with regards to clearance and wear and bearings are a pain to change while in the vehicle. If you plan on degreeing the cam, it's a little awkward reading the dial, again depending on the vehicle and the extent of disassembly. As for controlling pinging, detonation is more of an ignition issue. I could be wrong but I don't believe you should be trying to influence pre-detonation by adjusting the duration or lift of your cam. I'm sure there are some cam experts out there that can answer this more confidently than I. Also does anybody have any suggestions for Cam Grinds that will reduce the chances of pinging & also create enough vacuum for the power brakes?
