Thank you everybody for all the info. After checking everything carefully, it appears that someone has modified my release latch. It is cable operated from inside; it appears that the top lever that originally went towards the front of the grill (and thru it) has been reversed, with a cable attached to it. BUT, the pin goes down only thru the first catch, which, after reading all the posts, will have to be corrected before I drive the car. I would definitely feel safer if there was a second, completely separate catch to prevent the hood from accidentally heading south on a northbound trip.... Has anyone done a modification to that effect? Again, thanks for the advice and info.
