Mark, I installed an in-line pump from Auto Zone. I have it back at the fuel tank and it's wired to a hidden switch under the dash. Power comes from the ignition/accessory side so that it can't be left on when the ignition is off. I push the fuel through the working mechanical pump, and only use it after the car has sat for a few weeks, or when it's hot and it vapor locks. I turn on the key, flip the switch for a few seconds to build up pressure, crank the starter. It fires right up. After the engine is running, I switch off the electric pump and let the mechanical pump do its thing. It works every time. With the electric pump off, the mechanical pump sucks fuel right through the electric pump without any difficulty.
