Hello all, -I had a similar problem on a '59 Plymouth once...I removed the sending unit and cleaned out all kinds of rust around the locking ring, then cleaned and soldered a copper wire to the outside of the sending unit- then ran that to a clean spot in the trunk for the ground connection(using a crimped and soldered ring terminal and a stainless screw)...I got a new nitrile O ring from my local NAPA and had good gas guage behavior since then (until I sold the car)...
