Paul, Probably the best power supply to test 12 volt items is a battery. Be very carefull that you have polarity correct. Also, wouldn't hurt to put a 10 amp fuse between the battery and what ever you are testing. Might have to be a 20 amp fuse if you are testing window or seat motors. The problem with running radios or dashboards from a battery charger is that battery chargers put out high ripple. That ripple voltage can exceed the maximum voltage allowed on some electronics. The battery filters out ripple while you are charging with the alternator or generator.
