Hi Carlton, When Chrysler built the cars, the fenders and front sheet metal were installed before the sub-frame. The engine was on it and came up underneath to mate with the body. Depending on the tolerances, the sub-frame might touch the radiator support before the mounting surface at the firewall. That's where the shims come in. The sub-frame fits to tight in the body under the seats to allow much lateral movement. The dimension checking Ray gives is for collision repair. I would use the same shims that were there, as long as all the other parts remain the same. This past weekend I helped my brother remove the stub frame from the body of his L. It was very easy to disassemble. On the front mating area of the stub frame and body on the passenger side there were 3 (approx 3" x 6" x 1/16" shims) and on the driver side there were 2 of the same shims. Don will reassemble the same way but we wondered if this was a factory procedure to make a final correcting adjustment during assembly. What would be measured to determine if / what shims would be necessary?
