[Chrysler300] Spring, sprang, sprung

A question on spring rates:

Spring rates are published for a vehicle with values like 900 lbs/inch.

Is this published spring rate for each spring on each side, or is it an
overall spring rate for the axle? In other words, if the rear springs in a
Chrysler 300 are rated at 900 lbs/inch and 900 lbs are loaded into the
center of the trunk, right over the rear axle, will the rear wheel well
openings drop 1.0" or 0.5"?

My casual observations suggest the published spring rate is for the axle,
not the individual spring.

And, another question on Chrysler 300 springs available to club members from
Eaton: Are ALL years rear springs on Chrysler 300's the same or does Eaton
produce different springs for different years? Do they for sure produce
springs for the '55 C-300?

Hi Joe,

You may want to bring your 300 to a spring shop and see if new springs are
needed.
My local shop added an extra leaf and put in all new rubber interliners and
the sag went away.  Now the ride is very stiff, probably similiar to the
300J.

The New Yorker, station wagon and 300J (I believe) used 7 leaves and the
Newport and 300 Sport Series only used 6 leaves. This info is found in the
service manual.  Now my 300 sits just slightly higher than normal, but that
is good when backing down an inclined driveway (no more scraping)!
