Jeff, I put in silicone brake fluid in my '62 Polara in 1998, no issues. I rebuilt orig pump and service manual said use brake fluid. Since that time, all is well. In my G, I bought a top motor that said use trans fluid, so I put in Dextron III. Now it's only been a year, but no issues. My suggestion is open on of the lines, flush out system with Dextron III and refill. Trans fluid is high detergent and does the job. DOT 3/4 brake fluid can hold water and cause corrosion. Silicone works, but is more expensive - and you still need to flush system since you don't know what was in system originally. Just my 2 cents. My power top motor says to use "Type A transmission fluid". I've drained some fluid while working on it and it does not have transmission fluid in it now.(It has clear fluid - possibly power steering fluid) The only transmission fluid available here besides Type F is DEXRON III . The Dexron however does not say it meets the "suffix A" requirement. Will the Dexron III work or is it an overengineered fluid that will cause more harm than good? I used to use power steering fluid in my cars that didn't have a tag to use tranny fluid - it always worked fine. I believe there was a concensus after the last listserver discussion but can't recall it.
