Re: [Chrysler300] 300H engines

Hi John,

Let's nit-pick your figures a bit. Actually, the bore of the 413 c.i.
engine was 4.1875" or
4+3/16". The 426 c.i. engine bore was 4.250" or 4+4/16", the difference
being 1/16" or 0.0625". (1/16" = 0.0625"). This is from actual measurment of
my 300-E 413 engine and my 300-K 413 engine. Also the 1963 edition of
Motor's Auto Repair Manual states the same measurments. Allpar.com's figures
are +0.0075" off.

In practice, should a machinist use Allpar's figures and bore the 413 to
0.070" OS, they would have to bore the engine to 4.260" and use the 426
pistons in 0.010" OS. This would probably require custom sized pistons and
rings.

Hi all-
According to http://www.allpar.com/mopar/383.html , the bore of a 413 is
4.180" The 426 is 4.250". That would leave a difference of .070", the
overbore that would be required to bring a 413 to 426 cubic inches.

Maybe I'm off base on this, but I've always thought the 426 wedge was a

bored out 413. If that is true, how far out would you have to bore out a

413 to make it a 426? Mine is bored .030" over so I know my cubic inch

displacement is more than 413 in my G. I sense a math lesson in the works

here.

Most of my car books on Chrysler products show no availability of the 426
in

the Chrysler line. It appears the 413 (and 383 in lesser Chryslers) was
used

right up through 1965 and was then replaced by the 440 in 1966.

Dodges and Plymouths appear to show 426 availability starting in 1963.
There

is also the anomaly of the 413 in the Dodge 880, with was really a version

of Chrysler underneath that Dodge sheetmetal.

I may be nuts, but I think I remember that in order to build product, car

manufacturers were (are) required to list the parts and pieces with an

agency before they start production.

I can't think of the name.....might even be a government agency. I'm sure

George or Gil can tell me the name.

I can't find it but I am 99% sure I have a book from Chrysler of the 62

parts and pieces and I remember, that the book shows the 300H could have
had

the 413 engine or the 426.

I am 99% sure no H's ever got the 426. It was just a situation that by

listing the 426 in the book, Chrysler could have used that engine if they

wanted to.

Hello Club,

Can someone tell me which powertrain options were available on the 300H? I

am reading a book titled simply "Chrysler" by Dennis Adler published in

2000. It is supposed to be an overview of the history of Chrysler Corp.

cars, but not an encyclopedia of every car or its options. However when it

comes to the description of the 300's, it has the following to say about
the

300H:

"The 300H came equipped with a 380 horsepower, 413-cubic inched V-8, or an

optional 426 that could be ordered in 373-, 385-, 413-, or 421-horsepower

versions!"

Can someone more knowledgeable enlighten me as to all these combinations of

426 engines?

Thanks,

Gary Runkel

Canton, MI
