Since the street Hemi didn't come out until 66, it would be pretty hard for them to market one in 62. The race hemi came out in 64, and dominated Nascar, so they banned it in 65. That's probably the biggest reason the street Hemi was made in the first place. You may be confusing the 426 wedge with the 426 Hemi. 300ly, Don ----- Original Message ----- From: Rich Barber To: 'gary_r_23' ; Chrysler300@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Monday, May 11, 2009 12:16 AM Subject: RE: [Chrysler300] 300H engines I'm not very knowledgeable about the powertrain options, but I am curious and think I've seen several references that indicated Chrysler published literature indicating the 426 hemi was available in '62-'65 Chryslers, but never built one for sale to the public. No demand, or just unwilling??? Perhaps due to transferring the MoPar racing image from grampaw to the kids (Dodge and Plymouth). Unfortunate for grampaw, but probably a good marketing decision as they sold a heck of a lot more Dodges and Plymouths based on racing prowess than they ever could with hot rod Chryslers. Obviously, Chrysler did continue to offer the ram 413 engine through 1964. How the cars might have performed with the 426 hemi makes for interesting speculation and I'll bet someone, sometime put together such a package. I'm sure someone out there has the inside story of the advertising/unavailability of the 2nd generation hemi's in Chryslers. Interested minds want to know. I am reading a book titled simply "Chrysler" by Dennis Adler published in 2000. It is supposed to be an overview of the history of Chrysler Corp. cars, but not an encyclopedia of every car or its options. However when it comes to the description of the 300's, it has the following to say about the 300H: "The 300H came equipped with a 380 horsepower, 413-cubic inched V-8, or an optional 426 that could be ordered in 373-, 385-, 413-, or 421-horsepower versions!" Can someone more knowledgeable enlighten me as to all these combinations of 426 engines?
