'55-'56 Chrysler 300 fans really enjoy the underhood appearance of the big gold air cleaners on these cars, commonly referred to as a batwings for the triangular shape, but referred to by more knowledgeable 300 purists as a Delta Wings-not made by Rochester as I previously erroneously published, but by A-C (division of Delco--possibly an independent supplier then, before acquisition by GM?). It is interesting that many manufacturers now try to dress up their engine compartments with big air cleaners to cover up all that wiring and plumbing on and around modern engines. Whilst surfing the net I found the site listed below created to make comparisons of various batwings as found on various GM and Chrysler products. I believe it is incomplete, but has some points of interest. A member/subscriber to this venue has advised the '57-'58 Olds J-2 engines also had batwing air cleaners, but I have not been able to confirm that with online pictures. I do have one picture of a '57 J-2 air cleaner that is just a big, round tub with three wing nuts on top for the assumedly 3 carbs underneath. Does not look like a batwing to me. Am I correct in assuming the '55-'56 DeSotos with dual quads also had batwings/delta wings? Any other MoPars so equipped? D-500's? Fury's? I did buy a spare '55 batwing that is in need of repainting. Can someone provide the correct color and gloss? And what decals/labels are appropriate? http://www.pontiacsafari.com/L1EarlyV8Pontiacs/56DualQuad/BatwingAircleanerG uide.pdf http://tinyurl.com/ov9cpr Summary of the website info below--lost the table structure in converting to plain text.
