Might be that the rubber coupling let go.  Not sure if that would be 
easier to get, but certainly cheaper than a full gear box.  After 
disconnecting the battery you might be able to feel above the 
coupling while you rotate it to see if the upper shaft into the gear 
box is turning or not.
