RE: [Chrysler300] Dual-Point Distributor not Distributing!

Thanks for all your suggestions regarding my no-fire 300-K with the factory dual-point distributor fired up!

I finally got back to the K tonight, and had a few minutes of daylight to look under rthe hood.

I was checking for continuity between components inside the distributor, since it was suggested that one or more wires under the cap might be broken.

I propped open BOTH sets of points.  Ignition off. No battery in the car.

I checked to see that the Low-Tension coil wire coming in through the side of the distributor with a rubber grommet was connected to the first set of points, and that the wire between the points had continuity.  That was all OK.

I had constant continuity between the breaker plate and distributor body, even wiggling the breaker plate ground wire.

Unfortunately, I had continuity from BOTH SIDES of both sets of points to ground - and this is with the points propped open, remember.

I double-checked to see if there were any loose wires, a stray screw, anything askew.  Nothing.

I ran out of daylight, but couldn't check anything else any further - are there any other parts that could be out of whack causing a weak grounding of all components?  The only thing I can think of is that the connection that contains the LT coil wire, condensor wire and wire that connects the points is somehow grounded.

Remember that last tme that I was trying to start the K, when I cranked the engine with the starter and had the ignition on, I did get a weak yellow spark - enough to give me a mild jolt - but this was only at the primary set of points.  The car would not start.

I'm not the first to try to get this 300-K running since it left the road in the 70s - There are a couple receipts dated 1989 for points and a condensor.

I think I'm going to dig out a single-point unit I have to see if it'll run on that.

Your input is well-appreciated!

John,

Check the ground wire that grounds the movable plate that the points are mounted on.  Mine broke and left me stranded on the way to a show about 10 years ago.  The wire flexes a lot and is subject to wear.

Hi all,

I have a non-ram 300-K coupe with a stock dual-point distributor.  The engine turns over fine with a freshly-charged battery, but I'm getting very little spark, not enough to run.

With the cap off, I see a weak spark arcing between one set of points [the set closer to the driver's side of the car], and no spark at all from the other set.

I checked both sets of points.  They are nearly new, but I dressed up the faces of the points with a file anyway, and set the gaps.

I replaced the coil with one known to work.

I replaced the condensor with one known to work.

I even ran a wire with spring clamps on each end - one end to the + battery terminal and the other to the + terminal on the coil.

I achieved no change at all from any of the above.

Can anyone show me where I've gone wrong?

Thanks,
