[Chrysler300] '300'ing Across America

John is right to congratulate Richard on getting his dad's 300G across to California, and then driving with his dad back across America.

My dad died suddenly from a massive 1st ever heart attack when I was away in my first year at Uni, and as he was Managing Director of a National Company, plus I was a rather spoilt, maybe too self obsessed boy, I sadly never really spoke much too him about many of life's things we may wish in hindsight we had. I knew he had served in Japanese occupied West New Guinea providing Radar for Aust and US Forces, that where he got Malaria forever moving/hiding in jungle from ever searching Japs, but this like many other things was something he never talked about.

But as a young teenager, I went with him up bush, as he sometimes went to look at some old car or another, he a founding member of Australia's Sporting Car Club, due to his love of early sportcars, which after the war were often easier to buy/have, than so scarce new cars.

And so now, those few hours we spent together in his much loved Healey (he jokingly sometimes said, his Healey was 'the Ferrari that he didn't have because he had preferred to spend the Ferrari money on us kids instead' !!), as we cruised often hundreds of miles up bush at around 75mph, are much of the memories I have of time I spent truly alone with him.

So my advice to Richard and any other 300ly owning 300 members is - if your, or your parent's/family 300, can be a means to spend some maybe contemplative time with someone you may not always have - THEN GO FOR IT !!!

And the good news is, unlike a 6 cylinder Healey sitting on 75mph cruise speed, in your 300, you sure are going to have better conditions for hearing each other, never mind be far more likely to want to think about things to talk about!! Healeys may look great to some, but any 300 is going to be a far more friendly/enjoyable 'road trip' car.

my two bob's worth - remember, enjoy what we can, while we can for sure, no matter what tomorrow is/brings?

Christopher in Australia, as in the last week I just finishing bits back onto dad's Healey that I now oddly remember I last drove near exactly 30 years ago last week, this I remembering, as it the near last car I was driving it away from my home on our riverfrontage property, through 1 mile of often near foot deep floodwaters, praying it, electrics, not konk out before it/I got to high ground at front gate, as they rushed in from a break upstream, it over 2 years before it dried out, and I, the poor Healey and my other cars returned to total overgrown devestation - my heart goes out to all those poor people flooded/destroyed by the last two US hurricanes - water can be a scary, massive force when it goes wrong, never mind what $$$$$$ you lose.
And ps, once the Healey and recent non 300s finally out of the way - back onto finishing supercharged 'Flying Mile' 300C, and plans for big US visit next summer with it if possible, including maybe both '09 300 Club Meets - may the world economy please not melt down before then.

This was a good trip and mostly uneventful except for electrical problems in Abilene, TX and a VERY hot journey through the desert (after Yuma, it was brutal).I am doing this for my dad. He and I will fly out to San Diego this coming Thursday. We will do the "Cruisin' for a Cure" show in Orange County on the 27th. We will then drive the car back to Columbus, Ohio (home) via an as yet undetermined route.i have created the following web site to chronicle the trip home as well the trip West which i did solo.http://www.dicksrub.comPlease feel free to check it out. I will update it daily after Sept. 25th.If you are a SoCal resident and going to the show, contact me off of server, perhaps we can connect.Best regards,Richard Osborne[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
