The letter "S" is the suffix of all Carter carburetors. My recollection is that it is there to indicate "an assembly of parts". All the individual parts also use the similar Carter numbering system so to indicate each completed assembly still using the Carter system, the letter "S" is added to complete assemblies. Now about the "A" on the tag Mark has. Sometime during Carter's assembling the 3256S carbs they decided to make a change in the list of parts that made up the 3256 assembly. Thus they had to somehow indicate that this was the second type so that mechanics would know it had a difference somewhere in the parts list. So they added the letter "A". I think on extremely rare occasions during a production run they also would find reason to make another change and such carbs became "....SB". Just as a side note, is everyone aware what "WCFB" stands for? Pretty simple when you think about this as Bill (William) Carter's company building these four barrel carburetors isn't it? We all know about the aluminum four barrel carbs that followed.
