RE: [Chrysler300] stainless trim repair

Before attempting to repair stainless trim off a rare 300, one maybe should think/ask where is one going to get another trim/piece if one ruins it in trying to repair it !!??

Stainless trims can be repaired by professionals - often quite badly damaged ones, but often way more damage than the original damage/ding/dint is done by someone not knowing what to do.

If you want a 'so so' job, and have done some panel repair before, sure maybe try pushing the dint/ding out if that may do it, but start hitting it with something that you hit with a hammer, and good luck, and most liklely goodbye to doing a concours job !! That is my two bobs worth - if your car is a piece of crap, have a go - if you want a show car, pay the little it will cost to get a top job, rather than stuff it, and then have the 'worry and angst/cost' of finding another most likely damaged '300 not found under every tree nowadays' bit, you then will pay to get repaired as you should have with the first one you had?!!Christopher in Australia where our rain has turned to near hail, and subsoils finally near wet enough to guarantee grain crop of some sort by summer

ps: of course do your homework re who repairs it - only use ones who others recommend - they will be cheaper and do amazing job ifg you pick well

Hi Bill,From what I have read, and the little I have done, the following were some recommended steps.1. Evaluate, trim with sharp creases or edges will be very hard to bring back.2. Some folks have recommended tapping on a small anvil, others have recommended using smooth non-metallic instruments to actually press the dents out before trying any tapping. When one taps sheet metal with a hammer against a hard surface, the metal is flattened (obviously) but is also increased in area causing a bubble.3. If the dent is brought almost out to the surface, or if the dent is brought beyond the surface, then metal must be removed to achieve a flat surface. That means filing or sanding. The metal is draw filed with progressively finer files, then sanded until absolutely smooth. THEN, the polishing can be done to bring back the proper luster. Care must be used to avoid burning the metal during polishing/buffing to avoid that nasty blue look.I have done a couple of small pieces of trim and they turned out ok. I think with a lot more practice the time involved and the product would be a lot better. It took me hours of work for these small pieces. The point is that the dent removal is just the first part in a very laborious process, so don't judge your results yet, the job isn't done. :-)Bill HuffAt 8/9/200808:45 PM, Bill Leahy wrote:>well i fiddled with the stainless roof trim that was quite buggered.>>i carefully tap tap tapped on the little dents...and i think i improved>them a bit.>>then i polished them with compound and a buffer...and now i have shiney>little buggered stainless.>>so, the next step is to find one of the pro people and get it done>right...or just leave them off as one club member suggested.>>ain't we havin' fun with these crazy old cars? yahoooooo>>billllllll in hot hot hot kennewick washington>>[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
