The vents on my F (still on) and the F cvt (I had owned) were "stamped" anodized aluminum, not cast. We may never know, but a clue to its significance lies in how these unusual alternatives were fabricated. A stamped aluminum plenum substitute makes for a curious offering on its own; for whatever reason. It may be the result of a manufacturing run experiment, or as a low cost high-impact marketing idea. But a zinc die-cast (white metal alloy) plenum cover option would beg further explanation. Duplicating an otherwise perfectly adequate metal stamped piece would be the result of convincing debate on someone's part: something that was thought out, justified and funded. Die-cast tooling has always been expensive. So, are these oddities die castings, or the easier-to- rationalize anodized aluminum dress-up alternatives to body-colored steel? Aluminum and white metal can both be referred to as non-ferrous alloys. Those who may have a grille off their car or whatever, please look at the underside of the piece for evidence of mold ejection pin markings or a general heftiness to the piece: these castings would be thicker than sheet metal. (If they were chrome, one may suspect owners did it or maybe Dealer, but in alloy, this had to be factory, and deliberate ?!) If price list shows alloy item, my guess is it would have been dearer/extra cost/price. Anyone have a price list ? (And if it not a big seller, that maybe why it only a one year option?) Pontiac's early 60s GTO was supposedly born/influenced by what people were doing to or with their cars - Chrysler likewise would have been aware of what people did to make their cars a bit fancyier/sporty etc? Exner, GM's Harley Earl - famous stlyists - all watched what others did, tried. I have no idea why, but a few cars utilize an unpainted air intake grill. (All of mineare painted.) Both types are identified in the parts book, upg 23-61-0 as Panel, cowl top fresh air opening insert. PN 2165 691 is "steel" and 1909441 is "aluminum". Both are shown as released for all Plymouth, Dodge, DeSoto, and Chrysler vehicles. The 1961 parts book does not list the aluminum one, so it was a one year only venture, I guess. I only have noted a few carswith the aluminum intake, but would be interested to hear from members who have originals. Also, I suppose it is possible that the aluminum ones werepainted originally, but experienced poor adhesion.
