Forgot to mention in my previous post... The filters I'm using now are 2-3/16" high. I barely have sufficient threads coming through the top of the air filter to get nuts on now. I now if I used elements that were 2-1/2" high (as Dave suggested) I couldn't get either nut on. As a matter of fact, it is highly questionable whether the nut could be installed on the non-carburetor rod if the filter element was even 2-1/4" high...
