Re: [Chrysler300] Oils in antique Chryslers and others

I subscribe to an international auto technicians network. Engine oils are a constant ongoing topic. Most of our trusted information comes from an individual that is an independant consultant providing training to the auto industry. From him, we get a plethora of information. Way too much I think, which is easy because the subject is complicated.

Auto technology has increased the demands on engine lubes. Old, trusted products will not work in the crankcases of new cars. For antique cars, the concern is backwards compatibility of the new products. There is no easy answer to any question related to backwards compatibilitry as I see the situation.

What I do, with new iron, is to rely on the manufacturer to spec the right product. GM, Ford, Chrysler, BMW and all have specifications. I match oil specs to vehicles. From what I have learned, there is no reasonable way that any 'one size fits all' product will meet, much less exceed, manufacurers requirements across the board.

Engine oil meeting the original requirements of 300 letter cars has not been manufactured for a good many years. But, what I have been using I think has been appropriate. I have used straigfht 30W conventional 'forever'. Curiously, web site information for Pennzoil and others specifically mentions that straight 20W and 30W meet the old API SE specification and therefore suitable for older engines. Manuals for my '60s and '70s vehicles state that straight viscosity oils provide superior protection in HD use. Course, that was then. My 383 has always been on 30W Pennzoil and all others switched a number of years ago to 15W-40 Pennzoil Long Life fleet oil that was and still is for gas/diesel flleet use. So is 15W-40 Shell and Delo and others even though API Cj4.
