Hi Mike; Unfortunately, there are no marks on the damper to tell if the outer ring has moved. Plus, the fact may be that your timing chain may be off a tooth one way or the other. I do have new dampers for the '59 thru '65 300s in stock for the past two years. Listed in the Club News and Newsflite. $115.00 post paid in the U.S. I have sold approx. 32 so far with no complaints. I have also been aware of failures with dampers "recast" with poured silicone, versus the rubber insert (which is installed under high pressure and the proper durometer, i.e. hardness). I had one of those "silicon" dampers on my "J", it failed within a few hundred miles. That's why I found a manufacturer. As a further note, a company here in Jonesville manufactures dampers for FORD and my neighbor works there. He gave me a very good education about dampers and how they are constructed. He laughed when told about the "silicone" repair. Our 300 engines can destroy them easily. When I install a damper that I know is good, compairing it to a factory new one, I place punch marks on the outer ring and center portion and check from time to time to see if any "slippage". The "torsional" energy between the center and outer ring is quite great. Especially the way I drive. Dist. cam angle for the H should be 34 - 40 deg. total with each set at 27 - 32 deg. with advance set at 10 deg. @ 500 r.p.m. on a warm engine. I'm trying to find out if there are any markings of the outside that would indicate whether slippage has occurred or not. The book call for timing to be set on my H at 10 degrees BTC. In order for my car to run the way it should and have the power it's supposed to have, I need to have the timing set at 52 degrees BTC. And there's no pinging! The only thing wrong with having the timing set at that point is the engine feels like it's surging so I have cut back the timing to 42 degrees BTC and it runs perfectly. Anyone have any ideas why my timing is so far off?
