[Chrysler300] buzzing Hurst

Hi Hurst fans,

The other night I was on my way home from a cruise and needed to flip on my headlights (darkness is coming earlier every day).

The headlight doors opened fine and the lights came on as usual, but it was accompanied by a buzzing sound from behind the dashboard. It seemed to be coming from behind where the row of idiot lights are.

It was not the seat belt or ignition warning buzzer, because that noise seems to come from near the center of the dash and is a different pitch.

The buzz is not constant, but bursty or intermittent. It also makes the alternator needle move a little to the right (charging) during the duration of the buzz.

Anyone have any ideas on what this could be? It doesn't happen at any other time than when the headlights are on. If I just put on the parking lights, there is no noise.

Is there some kind of relay or something that controls the headlight door motor that could be doing this? It almost sounds like a voltage regulator with points acting up, but this is a 1970 and has electronic voltage regulator, and the noise is not in the engine compartment, but up behind the dash.

I'm not as limber as I used to be, so if I knew what I was looking for ahead of time, maybe I could save my back and neck muscles.

Any hints or clues appreciated.

John
