My "Adam" '53 New Yorker Pan Am car has a Powerflite and is the 5the to last '53 NYer built. It also does NOT have the extended bellhousing of the '51-53 Chrysler Hemis. Adam has been estimated to be rated at 315 HP.

Similarly, the Torqueflite transmission was introduced in the highest horsepower producing car models late in '56 to prove its mettle for introduction in the 1957 year. The only difference here is that the old semi automatics were totally dropped after 1953 whereas the Powerflite continued production in the lower horsepower models for several more years because it was fully adequate to the task.

My father bought a brand New Black New Yorker in 1954. The day he came
home we were all setting in the house when we herd the most ungodly
screeching and roar we ever heard in our very quite neighbor hood. Our
whole family went running out the front door along with the rest of the
neighborhood and there he was. One giant cloud of white smoke
engulfing the Car and the Hemi wound up tight. When he pulled the new
Chrysler in the drive way he caught all kinds of Hell from my mother.
The Dealer told him that it was impossible to break the powerflight
transmission. So he gave it the old hit reverse at 20 MPH and stood on
it. Well it didn't break but I know he took 10,000 miles of f the rear
tires.
