Mike- I had a similar problem with my '64 Newport top - the metal link arm that connected to the hydraulic ram was bent, don't know why, but the top worked normally after I replaced it with a good one. I'd check the shape and orientation of the top frame components side-to-side. Also, maybe there's air in the system? Then it takes off an operates properly. This happens every time from the closed position. When I'm putting the top back up, it operates properly. The hydraulic fluid is at the correct level and there are no leaks that have been observed. Any ideas what is dying?
