RE: 300G Transmission - reply

Happy Friday. (hopefully)
The starter on my G did not consistently engage the ring gear immediately
after the driveline rebuild (incl. new ring gear & starter gear). The
starter would grind-away on the edge of the ring gear teeth every third
start or so. When it did engage, it turned-over reeeeal slow. Tried diff. -
or no shims and even a different starter (thanks, Ted!). I spent hours under
the car with my nose to the bellhousing and a remote starter switch in hand.

Turned-out it was a bad positive/primary starter wire (bad/dirty 40+ yr-old
crimp connections, I assume). I bought a new, super heavy gauge cable from
the local battery joint and the ring gear engagement issue went away, and it
turns over fast every time. Not sure why.....as it seemed more logical to
be a solenoid issue....but it works now and shows the "right" scuffs on the
gear teeth.

best wishes. vath (70+ degrees in Atl)

Hi AL,

Everything is quite different, between the cast-iron torqueflite and the
aluminium one; starters do not interchange; neither do torque converters
and/or ring gears. There is virtually no possiblilty that the wrong
components were used, especially if the starter does accomplish its function
(albeit in a noisy way) and gets the car started.

If the starter is making a grinding sound, it would appear that it is not
meshing correctly with the teeth of the ring gear on the torque converter.
Best thing to do would probably be to pull the starter out and visually
inspect the ring gear; there should be some visual sign of improper metal to
metal contact which will help in diagnosing the problem.

There should also be a shim or shims between starter and engine block, where
starter bolts to block. Did someone forget to reinstall the shims?

Let us know the outcome

Hi All,
I need help with my 300G. I just had the transmission rebuilt and the
starter is making a horrible sound. They replaced the ring gear on the
torque converter, can anyone tell me if there are different ring gears or
starters for the cast iron case torqueflite and do they match the aluminum
case torque flight?

Thanks, Al
