Rich: I suggest that you use only an expert with experience in these boxes for a rebuild, else we will be hearing a tale of woe in the future. No OTJT for this project. There have been a number of listsrv messages on this topic. The Great White Hope from Big Red country scored a Chairman's Pick trophy today at the Brentwood Cornfest Car Show. That's two major wins in four days. The car (and its pilot) is grinning like Lightning McQueen and Hudson Hornet. Lots of admirers of our non-spec white 1955 C-300 and the show was only 2.4 miles from home. But, it is now drinking power steering fluid as fast as I can feed it in--out of a weep hole on top of the box. Are there overhaul kits available for the box? I purchased a used spare box and shaft that I'd like to have overhauled correctly and thoroughly before installing it. Any input on effective repair shops in the Bay/Sacramento area--or elsewhere, would be appreciated. My mechanic is a skilled mechanic and machinist, but we would need a kit of seals and wear parts to do the work in his shop--and maybe special tools??? Other than new hoses, is there anything else that should be done when the box is pulled? It looks like it must come out into the passenger compartment after removing a piece of the floor pan. I do plan to replace the horn wire as it tends to honk the horn at inopportune times. The car only has 78,000+ miles on it and is a little sloppy steering on center. I'm still running the old, but low mileage L-78:15 Remingtons. Just about the time I'm feeling like our 1955 C-300 would never have a chance for another award at a generic car show, it won first place in the 1950-59 class at the Antioch, CA car show yesterday. This is a repeat from the first place-coupe award received on 7-4-04, 72 hours after I received the car. The cars at this show are judged by independent car-guy judges who apparently prefer a decently restored unique icon of a car to a perfect and solid chrome belly-button car. The car always draws a crowd of young and old with good questions. Lots of kids taking pictures of the car's exterior and interior with their cell phones! We will try again this weekend at the Cornfest Car Show in our own City of Brentwood. Thanks again to former owners Tony and Minna Greco of Omaha for restoring and maintaining this beautiful car. I'm trying to keep it original and make a few improvements along the way.
