My brother who has sold Mercedes Benz for an Arlington, VA dealer for many years, related this tale to me. A prospective buyer came in and asked to order a 300 SD(one of Mercedes' crummy diesels that they were wont to foist on the public to aid them in meeting EPA's CAFE fuel economy standards). His requirement was for one in a pea green color with a red interior. The long of it was they he was told that as this was a very special combination, that a 5000 dollar deposit was a requirement(the dealership not wish to be stuck with this fright pig if the buyer should back out). The man paid the deposit, the car was ordered, arrived, the man was called and as you can guess, decided for some reason to forsake his 5 grand and the car. The car was then placed on the showroom floor where it remained the subject of much debate and ridicule for several weeks. One day a man walked in with his wife in tow, saw the car, the wife loved it(said it was exactly the color that she was seeking) and the car was sold at almost no discount. My brother also got the deal because none of the other salesman were even interested in marketing this auto, so that anytime anyone would show any interest in even looking at it, they all would point to my brother. My brother who was until then, the goat in the eyes of his Sales Manager, became a hero. I will always remember what he told me in recapping this tale, "That there is an ass for every seat". According to him, this is common terminology in the car business.
