Just found the problem. There is a box in "options" for spelling. I had the box checked to ignore misspelled words in original text or forwarded text. I had assumed that this would protect me from having spellcheck merely check my text, and ignore the misspelling in any text that I was replying to. Not the case. It also ignores misspelled words in the text that I enter in replying to or forwarding an email. A distinction with a difference.
