Terry McTaggart Without any specific knowledge, let me suggest that grille without the "void" might be one which someone "repaired" what wasn't "broke," possibly believing the void was a broken piece? Reminds me of a bit of VW lore. The very early "splits" (so called because of the bar dividing the back window) had a small bulge just above the windshield, designed for attaching an eyelet to stabilize an antenna (if so equipped). At least one industrious body shop involved in restoring such a VW, thought this bulge was a defect (dented from the inside?) and smoothed it off.
