RE: [Chrysler300] 413 rebuild followup

Hi Carlton, the numbers that you list as being stamped on the machined
surface on the front of the block are confusing. The correct stampings
for a 300H engine should be S 43 ( the S means 1962 and the 43 means
413), HP (high performance) and a date stamping such as 2-24 ( FEB
24th). Check the H3 and the J2, perhaps the H is a poorly stamped 4 and
the J is a poorly stamped 0. No HP stamp means it is not an H engine.
Also, as you probably know, the H engines came with solid lifters.

Thank you to everyone who provided advice - it was all very helpful.

The heads had previously been gone over and I could see a couple of new
valves so I didn't think about anymore work on them. I will check
whether hardened valve seats have been installed and if not, probably
get that done.

Fern Rivard had the block and crank checked at a machine shop before he
provided them to me and it was their recommendation to grind the
journals 0.010 (they are standard now but need cleaned up) and to take
the cylinders to 0.040 over (they are 0.030 now).

I intend to have the machine shop assemble the engine, so I want him to
buy the rebuild kit - he is satisfied with all the various manufacturers
- and will then also take care of any conflicts/problem. He sends parts
out for balancing and said it cost $165 more unless there were some
serious weight differences. So, I'm debating having that done. I
reconfirmed the prices and kit contents (wrist pins are included) he
gave me before and checked with our local Chrysler dealer and the
Carquest shop I deal with and both people gave him a strong thumbs up.
This engine work is the first major work underway; I do intend to have
the trans redone by a pro too. The rest of the work I think my
son-in-law and I can handle.

I have tried to catch Fern Rivard by email but haven't had any luck in
the last few days. Can someone help me with a few part numbers or point
me to a source?

block - 2205697-2, R.L. 7-24-61 (in the casting, on the side); 2-J2 and
H3 (stamped on machined surface at front)

rods - 1851595 LY DF 84/86 MS 3049 L (cast in the web, on both sides)

heads - 2402557-2 (cast on upper head surface)

crank - ? (have looked twice now but cannot find a part no. other than a
few odd digits, 18, 6, 9 (stamped on the outer edges of the
counterweights) - where should the part no. be?

I'm sure Fern has given me compatible parts for the engine and I'm
learning most 413/440/ and even some early 383' s had interchangeable
parts, but I did want to know just what I had.

As a final question (for now); how was the compression increase
accomplished in the H motor?

Thanks again for everyone's help.

Carlton Schroeder
