The "burnout" was probably caused by the engine not being properly grounded.
If the Battery cable was not a Dual wire cable, that is, one part going to
the block and the other part going to body ground or there was no grounding
cable from the block to the body (usually around a motor or trans mount)
then the path back to the Battery was thru the shift cable. The engine and
trans being mounted in rubber, can cause lots of problems if the grounds
aren't right. 
I've seen upper rad hose goosenecks (alum) eaten away due to the Neg current
using the water as a path (Rad was mounted solidly to body).

appearance but much better material, etc. than the original.

something and caused a meltdown.
