In addition to what John says, you also have to check the plate numbers with the dmv to make sure they are not in use on another vehicle. With so many cars through the years here in cali the numbers get dropped out of the system and then reused. There is actually a pretty fair chance that the sweet set of vintage black plates you bought may not be useable at all. At that time, they told me that the plates (both front and back) must be not only from the year of manufacture but also within a couple of months after the "Birth date" of the car. Thus if the car title was issued in January of 1962, the plates would have to have been issued sometime within a couple of months after January, 1962. Of course, the DMV or AAA are the only source of knowing when a plate was "issued" since (to my knowledge) it is not stamped on the plate. All I am saying is to be sure to check with the DMV or AAA before shelling out big bucks and getting your hopes up for a "Black Plate" car. On another note, I told this information to a local street rodder and he just laughed. He showed me his "Vanity" plate on his California Street Rod that he had simply repainted black with yellow letters. It is actually supposed to be one of the blue plates with yellow letters. He runs it all the time here in California. I don't know if the police here in California have the information on their in-car data terminals as to what color the plates are supposed to be if they stop you for something. If you are in some other state, I doubt that the police would hassle you but the local DMV might not let you transfer them to your vehicle. As the article says, check with the local authorities about the actual wording of the law before spending the big bucks. They are pricey, but I would be willing to pay a fair price for a good pair of 1951 plates and 1955 tags. Jayhawkers: I have a nice pair of Kansas tags reading DEJA VU if anyone is interested. Issued about in 1986, or so.
