I have the same problem with a new rebuild. After sitting, it sometimes (not always) takes 15-20 seconds to go into either first gear or reverse. I can override it by pushing the "1" gear button, at which time it goes directly into gear, and then sometimes, it works just fine. But usually, it likes to wait before it is ready to go. Kind of like a good woman! Of course, once the tranny is warm, it works just great!! Just like a good woman! Am I getting myself in deep? Once going, there is no problem, and the tranny seems to behave properly. Any ideas out there?
