Align your timing mark(notch) on your balancer with the marks on your degree indicator so you know you are at TDC on your #1 cylinder. So long as your #1 plug lead is plugged into the distributor cap where the rotor is pointing to, and the rest of your firing order follows around the cap, you're good to go. It doesn't matter what position the distributor is in. If the drive gear is off a notch or two from one engine to another, the shaft will dictate where the rotor points as it will only go in one of two ways (180 degrees apart). In other words, if you don't like the orientation of the distributor, you must either remove it and the pump drive gear and adjust it OR just move the leads around until it sits where you like it.
